  • 1803 - Legislature passed an act creating County of Scioto
  • 1828 - First Scioto County Fair
  • 1859 - Fireclay discovered in Sciotoville
  • 1863 - The Confederate force Morgan's Raiders led by Gen. John Hunt Morgan headed towards Portsmouth but surrendered before arriving
  • 1865 - First firebrick plant was built on the riverfront by McConnell, Porter, & Co.
  • 1871 - McConnell, Porter, & Co. and three other plants on the site were consolidated into the Scioto Firebrick Company
  • 1872 - Marting's Department Store began as a small feed and grocery store
  • 1873 - Scioto Valley Firebrick Company built the first plant on the northwest side of Portsmouth
  • 1880 - Drew-Selby Co. partnered in a shoe business with Irving Drew and Bernard Damon
  • 1890 - B.P.O.E. (Elks) established in Portsmouth
  • 1892 - City Council passed legislation for trolley car service
  • 1893 - Portsmouth Street Railroad & Light Company conducted first run to New Boston
  • 1897 - Enos Reed Pharmacy (Second and Court Street), owned by George and John Wurster, was the first store to offer Coca Cola
